Day 5: The Birthplace of the Cacao Tree and the "Nativo Project"

As we've previously explored, the Peruvian Amazon possesses one of the world's greatest biodiversities. The region is also acknowledged as the birthplace of the cacao tree. It's here, at the heart of the tropical rainforest, where cacao originated. An estimated 60% of cacao’s genetic diversity is believed to naturally exist in Peru. In other words, the country boasts an exceptional diversity of cacao varieties and thus, aromatic profiles. A delight for chocolatiers and chocolate enthusiasts. Unfortunately, this diversity is also at risk due to the prevalence of monoculture practices (i.e., plantations where only a single cocoa variety is grown). These practices have led to the gradual disappearance of many native cacao trees.

In 2018, with the support of our community, we conceived and launched the "Nativo Project" to identify, preserve, and study the genetic diversity present in the Huayabamba Valley. Field surveys of these different varieties resulted in the creation of a database comprising 89 different cacao trees, forming the "Collección Choba Choba Huayabamba." Through this project, we have a dual objective. Firstly, we aim to preserve this valuable diversity by establishing a conservation garden in the Santa Rosa community in 2023. There, on a small one-hectare plot, we've collected, centralized, and propagated these cacao trees, thus ensuring their long-term conservation. Secondly, we've initiated a process of investigation and evaluation of these 89 specimens. Productivity, disease tolerance, sensory profile—these are all criteria that will allow us to select the most interesting cacao trees in terms of agronomy and aroma. These "elite" cacao trees can then be redistributed to our farmers...
