Day 15: Conservation Efforts in the Huayabamba Valley

In 2010, the conservation project known as the Biocorridor Martin Sagrado was launched with the aim of preventing deforestation of 303,000 hectares of primary forest. Previously, these areas were heavily impacted by illegal logging for illicit coca plantations, livestock farming, and subsistence or commercial crops.

This project prioritizes the comprehensive development of communities near these forest areas to empower them and encourage caring for and respecting the forests. It supports them by strengthening their capacities and providing financial assistance for the development of sustainable economic activities based on territorial planning and the promotion of participatory governance. Its implementation aims to generate new opportunities and social, environmental, and economic benefits for all communities within its sphere of influence, contributing to local and regional development. It's worth noting that this project has supported the consolidation of an overarching forest conservation strategy in the UNESCO Gran Pajatén Biosphere Reserve, as well as other conservation concessions, regional conservation areas, and private conservation zones.

The project initially focused on the integrated management of three large zones called conservation concessions, granted by the state to local community organizations. These concessions are "El Breo," "Montecristo," and "Martín Sagrado." The project's vision is to replicate this approach in new areas with the voluntary participation of additional communities.

In 2023, the Choba Choba Foundation joined this rainforest preservation effort through our conservation project covering over 9,000 hectares in the heart of the majestic Huayabamba Valley.
