Today, we give the floor to Doriza Caballero Mendoza, cocoa farmer and founding member of Choba Choba.
“As citizen and an individual committed to environmental stewardship, I am deeply aware of the essential role that forests and biodiversity play in sustaining life. Since 2006, I have been involved in sustainable farming practices by cultivating cacao trees alongside timber trees. This approach is aimed at reducing the impact of deforestation associated with traditional cacao farming. Currently, our community in Pucallpillo has taken a proactive step by conserving 274 hectares of primary forest through a dedicated conservation association, in which I am proud to participate.
This initiative has a vital mission: to safeguard the unique biodiversity, water sources, flora, and fauna of our territory. By preserving these essential resources, we hope to protect the delicate ecosystems upon which both our local and global communities rely. The conserved forest serves as a sanctuary for diverse species and a source of clean water, ensuring that the land remains resilient for future generations.
Our conservation efforts are not just about protecting local ecosystems; they are a commitment to the health and sustainability of our planet. By taking collective action, our community is helping to mitigate the risks that unsustainable practices pose to the natural world, both now and in the future. In doing so, we aim to leave a legacy of preservation, showing that rural communities can lead in the fight to protect natural resources for Peru and for the world.”
