Day 15: Jesus Zamara

Today, we meet another partner dedicated to rainforest conservation through their work – Jesus Zamara from PUR Project, who will introduce the REDD+ project Martin Sagrado.

“The REDD+ Biocorridor Martin Sagrado Project began in 2010, with PUR as its proponent, with the mission of preventing deforestation and degradation across approximately 300,000 hectares of primary tropical forests in the Huayabamba River basin. This area consists of three conservation concessions that form the certified project area: El Breo (managed by APROBOC), Martin Sagrado (managed by ACOPAGRO), and Monte Cristo (managed by APAHUI). Additionally, the project involves the participation of 17 communities and includes protection actions for eight conservation concessions located within the project’s leakage area.

The project's vision is to develop sustainable activities for communities in the project zone that allow them to live dignified lives without external support and without harming the primary forest, contributing to climate change mitigation. To achieve this, we work directly on implementing sustainable development activities involving the communities. Furthermore, we empower local organizations and women’s groups in various activities essential for their growth and development. Our work also includes training and raising awareness about the importance of conservation, not just locally but also on a global scale.

It is important to note that the project is part of the Gran Pajatén Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 2016. It has been acknowledged as a Model Forest by the IMFN Network and complies with international certifications, including VCS (Verified Carbon Standard) and CCBA (Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance).”
